Explore Architecture This Summer at UMD: ARCH150 – Discovering Architecture
High school students passionate about design can jumpstart their architectural journey with ARCH150 – Discovering Architecture, a three-week summer course offered as part of the University of Maryland’s Terp Young Scholars program in Summer 2025 – July 14 – August 1, 2025.
Course Highlights
This immersive program introduces the essentials of architectural design through diverse learning experiences:
- Dynamic Learning: Formal lectures, media workshops, one-on-one design critiques with hands-on assignments and review presentations.
- Core Design Principles: Daily exercises and weekly assignments that engage with spatial interpretation of 2D images, 3D formal exploration, and site-specific analysis.
- Special Focus Areas: Discover aspects of architecture, including landscape design, historic preservation, and urban planning.
Practical Skill Development
Students will gain hands-on skills in:
- Sketching and Hand Drawing: Learn visual communication and design techniques.
- 2D and 3D Representation: Understand design conventions and communication with architectural drawings and physical models.
- Site Analysis: Design a human-scale structure to enhance a site’s experience.
Prepare for an Architectural Career
Explore the educational path to becoming a professional architect and understand the various roles in the field. Students will also connect with current architecture students at UMD and experience life on campus.
